1) Beware the "skimmers" . . . Tuckpointing brick, done the way it should be- starts with removing any old mortar that is cracking and loose. There are tuckpointers that are known for getting by with a practice known as skimming- that is, just putting a thin layer of mortar on top of parts that are already loose and crumbling. While it may look OK for a short while, this kind of masonry work tends to show it's weakness and before long, things are right back to the problematic state they were in to begin with. 2) Lack of numerous local references happy with the job. It is said that success leaves clues, and if the tuckpointing pro you are about to hire hasn't left a trail of satisfied customers with jobs that are standing the test of time, you're better off to find one who has. Ideally, these folks are numerous and accessible, with contact information in case you'd like to talk to one or more of them. 3) No insurance or official business rating from a respected source, such as the Better Business Bureau.
